1949, Santa Rosa, California. Silent barber Ed Crane leisurely cuts hair in his salon, while his wife spins with her boss, haberdasher Big Dave, who has recently raised money for a new shop. Suddenly, Ed has an opportunity to get rich from the rapidly growing dry cleaning industry, and in order to get capital, he blackmails Big Dave, realizing that he can only achieve success in life by going to extreme measures. There seems to be no flaw in Ed's cunning plan, but he soon learns that by making this fateful decision, he has signed his own death warrant...
