Initially, it was planned to take Jodie Foster and Carey Mulligan for the main female roles. The role of Charlie Stoker was originally given to Colin Firth, but in the end the character was played by Matthew Hood. Wentworth Miller himself once admitted that when writing the script, he imagined Hood. The main composer of the thriller is Clint Mansell, but the minimalist composer Philip Glass also worked on the music.
