About 8-10 years passed before the plot of Bruce Wagner's script reached the cinema screens. The money eventually came both from Canadian investors and not without the help of German patrons. That is why the director did not know whether he would be able to shoot "Star Map" in America (Los Angeles) or not. The roles that went to John Cusack and Julianne Moore were initially offered to Viggo Mortensen and Rachel Weisz. The cast was completely selected by May 9, 2013. The filming took a total of about thirty days. The director and his team worked in Los Angeles for five days, and they spent the remaining twenty in Toronto.
