Nathan Barley is a web designer, freelance filmmaker, screenwriter, DJ and, in his own words, a "self-made media hub". He considers himself the coolest, hippest and trendiest guy in London - and what true fashionista doesn't read Sugar Ape magazine? Nathan Barley is sure that if he has a video camera and a computer, then he definitely has talent. Oddly enough, many residents of East London agree with him in this - people of unknown gender and age in tight jeans, whom the other main character of the series, journalist Dan Ashcroft, covered with shame in his manifesto "East of Idiots", published all in the same Sugar Ape. Paradoxically, it was after this article that Barley and "idiots" like him enrolled Ashcroft as their spiritual leaders...
