In the second part of the trilogy, Apu, despite the persuasion of his mother (who dreams of seeing his son as a priest), goes to study at Calcutta University. He finds himself drawn into the vortex of city life and forgets his origins. After returning to his native village, the young man learns that his mother died in his absence. The offer to take the place of a village clergyman puts a young man in front of a difficult choice.
